This paper explores and analyzes the decisive influence that Rubén Darío had on Gabriela Mistral's career as a writer, an influence that would lead her to be nominated for and receive the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1945. Mistral was not only heir to Darío's humanist perspective and the modernist literary resources with which he constructs his writing, but when Darío published two of her texts (“The Defense of Beauty” and “The Guardian Angel”) in 1913 in the magazine he edited, Elegancias de París, he ensured that she was no longer seen as a writer from the Chilean provinces, but as a writer of international stature.
