Design and validation of a scale of psychosocial impact of disasters (SPSI-D)

Authors

Abstract

Disasters are characterized by an impact on people and communities at risk, who will respond in a disruptive or healthy manner. The objective of this research is to define this psychosocial impact through the design and validation of a scale: SPSI-D. In order to do this: literature focused on the impact of disasters was reviewed; items were designed and evaluated by expert judges; and the scale was validated in a sample of people exposed to the earthquake and tsunami of February 27, 2010 in Chile. Parallel factorial analysis, confirmatory and ROC curves were used. The results demonstrate the validity, reliability and precision of the SPSI-D, which was made up of 51 items, grouped in 6 dimensions. The instrument integrates the advantages of measuring disruptive and healthy responses after a disaster. The SPSI-D is left at the disposal of professionals who require it.
